Lab Tests Performed During Pregnancy

Tests Performed in 1st Trimester:
  • A full physical exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap smear
  • Vaginal cultures for infections
Blood work:  These are required by Alabama and Federal Law for all pregnant women
  • Blood type and Rh status 
  • Blood antibodies
  • Blood counts
  • Rubella status
  • Syphilis status
  • Hepatitis B status
  • HIV status (optional. but recommended) 
  • Sickle cell screening (for people at risk) 
  • Cystic Fibrosis carrier status (optional)

Based on your individual risks or medical history other tests may be performed:
(Early Glucose Test, 24 Hour Urine Collection, Varicella Titers, Parvovirus titer, etc...)

Tests Performed in the Second Trimester:
  • Genetic Screening (more information...click here)
  • Diabetic Screening (more information...click here)
  • Blood Count

Tests Performed in Third Trimester:
  • Group B Strep Test
  • Fetal Non-Stress Tests ("Putting your Baby on the Monitor")

At each visit, you will be asked for a urine sample, weight, and blood pressure.
